I bought this portrait today from an auction in Pennsylvania. The work is attributed to Calvin Balis, an artist who painted in New York state from the 1830's to the 1850's. Photography put many an excellent portrait painter out of business.
The dimensions are 36 x 28 so the search is on for a frame that will add to his dignity and character.
He's just wonderful, I'm still looking for a man like him to make a lovely mate for the lady who hangs on my wall. :)
