FAKE DOUGH BOWLS being made in Europe and sold in USA as old.

NOTICE THE SKILL SAW MARKS...LONG AND EASY TO SEE. THESE ARE THE MARKS OF A NEW BOWL MADE TO BE PASSED OFF AS OLD. THE LONG SAW CUT MARKS GO FROM THE BOTTOM TO THE TOP EDGE OF THE BOWL. THE OUTSIDES OF OLD TRENCHERS ARE SMOOTH. ( THE ROUND ONES WILL SOMETIMES STILL HAVE LATHE MARKS GOING ALL THE WAY AROUND, BUT THE LONG ONES WILL HAVE NO SAW MARKS.) I HAVE COLLECTED THESE FOR ALMOST 50 YEARS. THE AUCTION HOUSE DIDN'T HAVE ANY PICS OF THE SIDES OR BOTTOMM OF THIS BOWL, OR I WOULD HAVE KNOW IT WAS FAKE. THE INSIDES OF THESE BOWLS ARE LEFT "RAW" AND ARE SCRATCHED UP AND GIVEN A FEW STAINS TO LOOK OLD. BUT THE OUTSIDE SAW MARKS WILL ALWAYS GIVE THEM AWAY. EBAY IS FILLED WITH THESE FAKE BOWLS, SELLING ANYWHERE FROM $80 TO OVER $200. I PAID $154 FOR THIS ONE, NOT KNOWING IT WAS FAKE. THE AUCTION HOUSE DID NOT KNOW IT, ETITHER. THIS ONE CAME WITH A SMALL BUTTER BOWL, SO IT WAS NOT A COMPLETE LOSS, AS THE SMALL BUTTER BOWL IS WORTH THE $54. So my loss is about $100 plus the shipping ( won't mention that...another $103.59 )

  1. Eeek... So sorry. There was flood of these that hit right we dough bowl and trenchers really gained "popular" popularity. I actually got into a somewhat heated discussion with a vendor over one when I suggested what she was selling was not what she was representing it to be. ~Robin~

  2. Oh no! I've seen quite a few of these. I didn't know the give away marks, but there just seems to be something 'off' about them - this is probably why.

  3. the marks that look like someone took a machette or long knife and whittled them show how FAKE they are. ALSO NO WOMAN would have her DOUGH BOWL that held the FLOUR for making the biscuits repairs with TIN and NAILS.... her fingers would sliced. NO REPAIRS of tin or iron pieces should be on the INSIDE or OUTSIDE. ALL WITH SUCH REPAIRS are FAKE and are treated with ACIDS etc to look OLD. THEY ARE FAKED in EUROPE.

  5. IF A BOWL IS TRULY OLD AND WAS REPAIRED the repair will be on the outside with a metal plate or with staples. Tiny holes were drilled in the wood and staples inserted ( so as not to split the wood further ) . I have STAFFORSHIRE TEAPOTS with staple repairs. Tiny holes were drilled in the porcelain and the staples added. These were often done to preserve precious heirlooms that family members were having repaired not to continue to use, but because they belonged to grandmothers or other ancestors and were keepsakes.
